Bram’s Blanket Finds Its Place

Bram climbed into bed, but he sat straight up. Mama tucked the blanket under his paws. “Windy worry,” Bram tried. The words came out small. Mama smiled. “That is the name.” She kissed his forehead and stepped toward the door. Before it even clicked, Bram popped up again. “Wait! My worry is still here.”

Mama came back to the bedside. “I left too fast,” she said. “Let’s see what your body needs.” Bram noticed his paws were tight. His shoulders were up by his ears. The lamp made a little golden island on the quilt. “My blanket fell off my feet,” he said. “And I can still hear the flap.”

“All right, little one,” Mama said. “Let’s do our three cozy things.” She pulled the blanket over Bram’s feet. Bram pointed to the curtain. “Windy worry,” he said, louder now. Mama looked with him. “Curtain in the wind.” Bram touched the lamp’s smooth base. Warm light. Covered feet. Mama close. His bed felt more like his place.

Mama sat in her chair, close enough to hear Bram breathe. The wind rubbed the window with a long shhh. Bram’s eyes opened wide. He pushed the blanket down and slipped one foot to the floor. Then the other. “Mama?” he called, already standing beside the bed.

Mama opened her arms, but stayed in the chair. “You came out of your resting place,” she said softly. Bram climbed onto her lap for one squeeze. His blanket dragged across the rug. “The shhh got too big,” he whispered. Mama nodded. “Let’s name that worry before we move.”

Bram listened. Shhh went the wind. Flap went the curtain. His paws held Mama’s sleeve. “Windy worry,” he said. “And curtain sound.” “Yes,” Mama said. “Windy worry. Curtain sound. We have named it. Now we check with our eyes, and then your body goes back to bed.”

They walked two small steps to the window. Mama kept one paw around Bram’s shoulders. The curtain lifted and settled. Behind it was only glass, dark sky, and a wiggly branch outside. “There is the wind,” Mama said. Bram let out a breath. “Not a creature,” he said.

Bram wanted to stay in Mama’s chair. It felt wide and warm. But his bed waited with the quilt turned back. Mama held out the blanket. “Resting place,” Bram reminded himself. He climbed in slowly. Mama tucked the blue blanket over his feet, then under one paw.

Mama settled back in her chair. “Windy worry was named. Window was checked. Blanket is here.” Bram nodded, little one, but his paws still wiggled. The blanket slid off one knee. He sat up fast. “It’s falling!” he cried, and reached toward the floor instead of resting down.

Mama caught the blanket before it touched the rug. Bram’s ears drooped. “I tried,” he said. “My body popped up.” “Trying counts,” Mama whispered. “Now notice.” Bram listened. Shhh. Flap. Then a smaller sound—his own quick breathing. He put one paw on his chest. “I am still jumpy,” he said.

Mama laid the blanket over Bram again, slow as snowfall. “Plan again,” she said. “Name it.” “Windy worry,” Bram murmured. “Feel comfort.” He rubbed the soft blue corner on his cheek. “Tiny lamp,” Mama said. Bram looked at its warm circle on the wall. “Back to pillow,” he whispered, and lowered his head.

The wind shhhhed again. Bram’s toes curled under the blanket. His shoulders lifted, then softened. He did not climb out. He whispered, “Wind outside. Curtain inside. Bram in bed.” Mama smiled from the chair. “Yes. I am close. Your bed is doing its resting job.” Bram’s paws grew heavy.

At last the room felt wide, but not too wide. The wind kept talking softly. Bram’s blanket stayed over his feet, under one paw, and beside his cheek. “Good night, windy worry,” he mumbled, little one. Mama’s chair creaked once. The tiny lamp glowed. Bram stayed in bed, and sleep came near.
