Leo and the Thirsty Backpack

Ms. Mina lifted a hand. “Garden pause,” she called. Some children took little sips. Leo touched his bottle cap, proud to find it quickly. Then a fat raindrop plopped from a leaf onto his ear. Plop! He giggled and forgot to open the lid. The pause slipped past like water on stone.

Soon the class followed the curvy path to the compost corner. Leo’s feet felt slower than before. His smile grew small. He licked his lips, but that did not help. The green bottle bumped his side, bump-bump. Leo stopped and looked down. “Oh,” he said. “That sound is for me.”

Leo looked at Ms. Mina. She nodded. “Good noticing, little one. Let’s stop safely at the path edge.” Leo unclipped the bottle, twisted the lid, and drank. Cool water slid over his dry mouth. He took two small sips, then one more. “My trunk feels happier,” he said.

Leo clipped the bottle back on his backpack. Tap-tap, it said, softer now. The class walked past lettuce leaves shiny with rain. Leo felt better, but the compost corner was full of wriggly surprises. “Worms!” cried Nia. Leo hurried close to look. His bottle swung behind him, waiting again.

Everyone crouched by the compost bin. Ms. Mina gave them small sticks for pointing, not poking. Leo watched a worm slide under a leaf. His trunk curled with wonder. Then his mouth felt a little dry again. Not very dry. Just sandy at the edges. He kept watching.

A breeze moved through the garden. The mint leaves shivered. Leo’s bottle bumped his side, bump. Leo blinked. “I hear you,” he whispered. He stood at the path edge, where Ms. Mina could see him. This time he opened the lid before anything else could steal his thoughts.

Leo took one small sip. Then another. He did not gulp or hurry. The water tasted cool, like shade. Samir looked up from the compost. “Are you coming back?” “Yes,” said Leo. “My bottle just reminded me first.” He clicked the lid closed and smiled.

When the class moved on, Leo chose a bottle spot. He clipped it where he could see the green flash near his elbow. Tap-tap went the bottle. “That is my sip sound,” Leo said. Ms. Mina nodded. “Good plan.” Leo walked lightly, splashing around a puddle, not through it.

At the pond bed, the class watched water beetles skate in tiny circles. Leo leaned forward. His green bottle stayed in its spot, bright as a leaf. “Look, little one,” Ms. Mina said gently, “Leo can watch and listen to his body.” Leo’s lips felt sticky. He knew that feeling now.

Leo reached for the bottle while still staring at the beetles. His trunk fumbled. The lid clicked crooked, and a few cool drops splashed on his foot. “Oops,” said Leo. Ms. Mina smiled. “Pause first.” Leo took one slow breath. The beetles could wait for a little sip.

Leo turned his whole body toward the path. He held the bottle with both hands and opened it carefully. Sip. Sip. His dry mouth turned smooth again. His ears relaxed. “Ready?” asked Nia, holding a leaf like a tiny umbrella. “Ready,” said Leo. “I can sip and still see surprises.”

The class followed the curving path toward the gate. Shoes made soft squashy sounds in the wet gravel. Leo clipped the bottle back where the green showed. Tap-tap, it sang near his elbow. He did not drink every step. He just knew where his water was, ready when his body asked.

At pickup time, Leo showed his family the bottle spot. “For school, the path, and outings,” he said. “Green side out.” His grown-up helped check the lid was closed. Leo gave the bottle a soft pat. “Come on, little one,” he laughed. “Thirsty backpacks like to come along.”
