The Universe’s Last Seed

From the wall, a round caretaker light blinked awake and hummed a low, friendly note. Ember pressed his nose to Milo’s knee, not blaming, just there. Milo swallowed and said, “We need help before we guess again.”

The caretaker light guided a warm breeze across the capsule, and Milo held the nozzle away with both hands. Ember watched the seed until its glow steadied, small but alive. Milo breathed out, feeling hope return like a candle relit.

The soft hum under the seed’s glass cradle faded into a thin, worried tick. Milo pressed both hands to the warm panel while Ember’s ears tipped back. Beyond the window, the station’s garden lights blinked one by one, as if the stars were holding their breath.

Milo opened his backpack and found the little silver mist cup tipped sideways, nearly empty. His cheeks went hot. “I forgot the second watering,” he whispered, and saying it felt scarier than any meteor outside.

Ember nudged Milo’s wrist, then tapped his star pendant against a round brass socket near the floor. A warm chime rolled through the roots beneath the deck. “You’re not alone with a job this big,” Ember seemed to say, and Milo breathed out slowly.

Tiny helper lights woke along the wall, showing a row of thirsty moss filters above the seed room. Milo stood on tiptoe while Ember steadied the hose with both front paws. Together they gave the filters one slow drink, not too much, not too fast.

The ticking softened back into a hum, and a pale green thread curled from the seed’s shell. Milo did not cheer loudly; the new sprout looked too small for noise. He touched Ember’s shoulder and said, “Tomorrow, we check together.”

The cracked pump gave one last tired cough, and a bright red handle blinked beside a softer blue one. Milo’s fingers hovered, fast and scared, but Ember pressed his paw to Milo’s wrist. “Not the strongest,” Milo whispered, remembering the seed’s tiny roots. “The gentlest.”

The blue handle opened a thin trickle, not enough to save the seed alone. Milo swallowed his worry and tapped the station’s helper lights, waking small round robots from their wall nests. Ember yipped kindly, and together they guided the helpers to hold loose pipes steady.

When the pipe sealed, a silver drop slid through the clear tube, then another, until the seed’s dark shell shone like rain. One pale green tip unfolded. Milo laughed so softly it was almost a breath, and Ember’s pendant filled the room with a warm star-glow.

The station turned slowly toward a blue-green moon, quiet as a held breath. Milo clipped the seed cradle safely inside his backpack, then looked at Ember. “We can’t make a forest today,” he said, “but we can carry tomorrow carefully.”

On the moon’s gentle hillside, Milo and Ember tucked the seed into warm soil and covered it with cupped hands and paws. A tiny leaf rose, bright against the endless sky. Milo smiled, knowing hope was not finished—it was something they would visit, water, and share.
