Nia and the Little Handwashing Song

“Now the rain part,” said Dad, turning the tap low. Cool water ran over Nia’s hands. The bubbles slid away in shiny trails. Nia turned her hands over and opened her fingers wide. No rushing this time. The little brown crumb was gone down the drain.

Mum wrapped the clean towel around Nia’s wet hands. Pat, pat, pat. “Dry hands help at the table, little one,” she said. Nia pressed each finger inside the towel, even the shy spaces. Her hands felt warm, soft, and ready. The strawberries waited, bright as little smiles.

Nia carried the strawberry bowl to the picnic cloth on the kitchen floor. The room smelled like lemons, bread, and sweet fruit. She sat down beside Dad and reached for the biggest strawberry. Then her red ladybug slipped from the windowsill and bumped under a chair. “Oh!” said Nia. “Wait for me, picnic.”

Nia crouched low and reached for Ladybug. Her fingers brushed the cool floor, then the chair leg, then a fluffy gray dust curl. She rescued the toy and smiled. “Found you.” Back at the cloth, the strawberry still waited. A tiny dusty smudge sat across one knuckle.

Nia lifted the strawberry again. The red fruit was cool and bumpy in her clean-looking hand. Then she saw the smudge. “My hand touched under the chair,” she said slowly. Mum nodded. “You noticed.” Dad moved the bowl back a little. “The picnic can wait for fresh hands.”

Nia hurried to the sink, but this time she did not skip. Dad pressed one small pearl of soap into her palm. Nia sang softly, “Palm to palm, round and round.” She slid her fingers through the foamy spaces. The bubbles tickled less now because she knew where they needed to go.

The tap made a small silver rain. Nia opened her fingers wide and let the bubbles run away. She checked the knuckle where the dust had been. All clear. Mum held out the towel. Pat, pat, press. Nia dried between every finger, then wiggled her hands in the sunny air.

“Fresh hands for the picnic,” sang Nia, and skipped back to the cloth. “Did you hear my song, little one?” she asked, holding her clean fingers up like ten tiny sunbeams. Dad smiled. “I heard soap, spaces, rinse, and dry.” The strawberry bowl waited in the warm square of light.

Nia sat down carefully this time. She looked at her palms, then between her fingers, then at the towel folded by the sink. “Still dry,” she said. Mum passed the bowl close. Nia picked the biggest strawberry by its leafy top. It smelled like summer and rain.

Nia took one bite. Juice shone on her lips. “Mmm,” she said, and her shoulders relaxed. No gritty feeling came with the strawberry. No dusty smudge sat on her knuckle. Just sweet fruit, soft bread, and the picnic cloth under her knees. Ladybug rested safely beside her cup.

Dad reached for a roll, then paused and looked at his own fingers. “I helped move the chair,” he said. “My turn.” Nia laughed as he went to the sink. “Palm to palm!” she called. Mum added, “Round and round.” The little song filled the kitchen like sunshine.

Soon everyone had picnic-ready hands. Nia touched her dry fingertips together and whispered the song one more time, just for remembering. “Before food,” she said, “fresh hands first.” Then she grinned at little one and held out the strawberry bowl. The kitchen picnic began at last.
