The Burrows of Better Questions

Pip sat on a flat crystal and rubbed one ear. “I don’t want to run faster in the wrong place.” Lumi’s cheeks warmed. She had wanted to be helpful so badly that she had turned helpfulness into guessing. The fog thickened when she opened her mouth too soon.

Lumi knelt beside Pip. “You’re right. No more blue-is-best guesses.” She took one slow breath and listened past the mist: drip, hum, distant chime. “We need questions that know what they’re looking for.” As she said it, one small clear stone blinked awake.

Lumi touched the little clear stone, and it chimed like a raindrop in a teacup. Around it, the fog thinned just enough to show three tiny scratches: a crescent, a blanket, and a crumb. Pip leaned close. “That stone knows something.”

Lumi did not ask every question at once this time. She looked at the scratches, then at Pip’s crumb-lantern. “What button are we looking for?” she asked carefully. The tunnel floor clicked, and three stepping-stones shone in a neat silver line.

On the first stone, a crystal picture blossomed: a round button with a sleepy moon trapped inside. On the second, a velvet cushion glimmered. On the third, a trail of moon-petal fuzz drifted away. Pip snapped his paws together. “So it was taken from the Nursery Nook!”

A whiskery tunnel beetle rolled out, polishing a button twice his size. Lumi almost blurted, “Did you see it?” but stopped. “Who passed here carrying a round moon-sleep button after nursery tidy-time?” The beetle’s antennae flashed, and a new green stone winked awake.

The green path forked around a glittering puddle. One burrow smelled of warm milk, the other of lavender dust, and both glowed sleepily. Pip tipped his nose toward the lavender. Lumi nodded too fast. They stepped in—and the stones went cloudy beneath Lumi’s boots and Pip’s paws.

Two bright chimes rang together, tumbling down the tunnels like spilled marbles. Lumi felt her hurry leap up again, sharp and jumpy. Then Pip placed the lantern in her hands. “Ask the tunnel what only the sleep-button would leave behind.”

Lumi lifted the lantern until its crumb-light trembled on the crystal walls. “Where did moon-petal fuzz from the missing round sleep-button fall after it left the Nursery Nook?” she asked. The fog pulled back with a sigh, and one golden burrow opened like sunrise underground.

Lumi and Pip raced along the golden stones, not guessing now, just following each clear shine. At the end, a sleepy field mouse blinked inside a moss nest, hugging the missing button like a pillow. “Borrowed,” she mumbled. Pip traded his soft scarf, and Lumi carried the button back.

They burst into the Nursery Nook as the last bright chime quivered. Lumi set the sleep-button into its round dent, and the cords softened from clang to lull. Then she turned to Pip. “I rushed us into fog. Thank you for slowing with me.” Pip’s whiskers lifted.

The baby badgers sighed into sleep, one by one, until the whole hill seemed to breathe. Granny Beryl gave Lumi and Pip a tiny clear button for Pip’s lantern. Whenever someone asked a careful question, it glowed—not brightly, just enough to find the next kind step.
