The Causeway of Cocoa Cogs

Lumi ran to the next handle, then the next, trying not to hear the worried quacks. Pip chased after her, paws slipping on damp boards. Each hurried tug made another gear shudder, but none turned. The causeway seemed bigger with every breath.

At the tallest gear, Lumi grabbed a handle twice as long as she was. It did not budge. Her picnic baskets tipped, and berry buns rolled to Pip’s paws. Lumi sank onto the boards. “I can’t pull the whole marsh,” she said, very softly.

Pip sniffed the spilled berry buns, then padded back across the sugar-sand, leaving three neat muddy prints in a row. Lumi wiped her cheeks and noticed each print showed exactly where Pip had stepped, not everywhere at once. The nearest gear had one dark tooth packed tight with sparkling grit.

Lumi leaned close until her nose almost touched the cocoa-cog. “It isn’t all stuck,” she murmured. Pip scratched carefully beside the packed tooth, and a trickle of sugar-sand fell away with a soft hiss. Farther down the causeway, one tiny wheel gave the faintest chocolatey click.

Lumi opened one picnic basket and set out a napkin, a spoon, and an empty bun tin. “First the stuck wheel,” she said, tapping the napkin once. “Then the sand. Then the tiny crank.” Pip dropped a reed onto the tin as if adding his own tool.

Lumi wrapped the napkin around the gritty tooth and held it steady while Pip nudged loose sand into the bun tin. Together they cleared one notch, then another. When Lumi tried the nearest handle again, the gear turned a crumb-width and stopped, but this time it had truly moved.

A duck boat rocked too close, and its wake slapped the boards. The bun tin tipped from Pip’s paws, spilling sugar-sand back toward the gear in a glittering rush. Lumi gasped, then pressed both hands over the napkin dam. “Oh no—not all the way back, please.”

Pip planted his muddy paws on the tin to stop it rolling, and Lumi breathed out slowly. The tallest gear towered above them, all round shadow and brown shine, but she looked only at the one notch beneath her fingers. “Hold there, Pip. I’ll scoop here.”

Scoop by scoop, Lumi filled the tin while Pip dragged it clear of the teeth. The packed notch opened like a little doorway. Behind it, almost hidden under a lily leaf, waited the tiny starter crank, cocoa-brown and no bigger than a teaspoon. Pip barked once, triumphant.

Lumi pinched the tiny crank and turned it once. Pip wagged so hard his tail blurred. The smallest cog clicked, the next cog clacked, and the great wheels rolled their cocoa song across the marsh. Twelve duck boats glided forward, their sleepy captains suddenly wide awake.

The blue-capped duck coasted alongside and bowed until his whistle bobbed. “You found the small beginning,” he said. Lumi handed him a berry bun from the rescued basket, then gave Pip the squashed one he had guarded. Pip accepted it gently, as if it were a medal.

When the last duck boat drifted toward the meadow docks, Lumi and Pip sat with their picnic between two humming gears. In the sugar-sand, Pip’s first muddy pawprint was still there, tiny and brave. Around it, the whole causeway made circles in the sunlight.
